Not the traditional daytime assemblage of floats and bands, for two evenings each December this special holiday gift from Highland?s public safety personnel brings a merry cacophany of lights and sirens, upbeat seasonal music, and Christmas wishes shouted from the police bull horn.
The dozens of Highlanders who rode on the flattop truck with Santa and Mrs. Claus braved icy cold winds to bring warm wishes to local kids.
?Who?s ready to get cold?? shouted a parade leader Wednesday night to the enthusiastic cheers of the warmly-dressed well-wishers.
Then, following an announcement of police cars, the merry band which included the parade truck, fire trucks, the county SWAT vehicle, and other public vehicles including one pulling a small trailer upon which a giant inflatable Santa and snowman gaily swayed, took to the streets. In remembrance of the 26 victims of the Sandy Hook tragedy, public personnel wore the photos of each of the victims. A brief ceremony in their honor was held at Immanuel Baptist Church before the start of each parade group.
The parade stopped at several schools and businesses so Highland kids could have the opportunity to whisper their Christmas gift wishes to Santa. Wherever they stopped, little ones mobbed Santa and Mrs. Claus as they alighted from their 18-wheeled sleigh.
