I?ve read an interesting article in Sheer Balance written by Brett Blumenthal showing a list of the healthiest city in America. The date was based from the fitness index of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).
Brett lives in Boston and luckily, she is situated in a city that was considered in the top 3 of the healthiest cities in the country. The number one spot belongs to Minneapolis while the 2nd place is to Washington. On the other hand, the top 3 worst belongs Louisville, Detroit, and Oklahoma respectively.
Basically, ACSM judge their rank according to personal health and community or environmental indicators. Personal health indicators pertain to healthy behaviors, chronic health problems, and number of health insured residents. To be specific, healthy behaviors determine the frequency of physical activity, smoking and nutritional habits while chronic health problems measure the rate of obesity, asthma, heart disease, diabetes, and death rates.
Moreover, the community or environmental indicators include things such as built environment, recreational facilities, school P.E policies, and primary care availability. Built environment describes the quality of areas including parklands, farmer?s market, and public transportation while recreational activities pertains to ball parks, play grounds, swimming pools, and tennis courts.
